Information for Parents

As the parent of a young child so sick that a central venous catheter (CVC) or portacath is required, you will want to do all you can to ensure that the risks of complications associated with the line are minimized. Summer’s Lifeguard™ was designed specifically to reduce those risks.

Summer’s Lifeguard is beneficial in the following ways:
  • The garment hides the tubing of the central venous catheter or portacath from your young child to minimize access and tampering by the child.
  • Keeps the lines away from the diaper area, GI-button or colonoscopy bag.
  • Supports the weight of the surgically-implanted, free hanging tubes on your child’s chest so there is less pulling of the skin and allow for minimal use of tape.
  • Allows for easy access to the catheter lumens for administration of medicine by caregivers.
  • The tabs on the garment are color-coded to match the lumens of the catheter for quick and easy identification by caregivers.
  • Mitigates kinking of the tubes allowing for flushing with sterile solutions by caregivers and provides for the uninterrupted flow of necessary medications or solution infusions via external intravenous pump devices.
  • Provides an added layer of protection to the central line or port exit site keeping the area cleaner.
  • Provides your child greater freedom of movement because the risk of expulsion of the tubing/lines
    is reduced.
  • Allows for easy dressing changes to the site, without removing the medical garment from your child.
  • The soft 100% cotton fabric is washable; is comfortable and safe for the skin.

• Infant:
  Chest size 16” - 18”/40.6 - 45.7 cm

 • Toddler S:
  Chest size 19” - 22”/48.3 - 55.9 cm

 • Toddler M:
  Chest size 23” - 25”/58.4 - 63.5 cm
